30/05/2010 - Top awards for Chandler and Robinson

Ian Chandler and Paul Robinson picked up the major honours during a weekend of celebrations to mark Whitley Bay's FA Vase and Northumberland Senior Cup double.

For the second successive season, Ian Chandler was named Northern League Manager of the Year at the League Dinner and Presentation Night on Friday. Paul Robinson - pictured alongside Leon Ryan and Adam Johnston - won the BBC Newcastle Player of the Year trophy and was runner up in the League Player of the Year section. Tom Kindley was also runner up in the Young Player of the Year category. Supporter Gordon McColl was a runner up in the Unsung Hero Award section in recognition of the ground improvement work he has organised and carried out on the terraces. To round off an excellent evening for the Club, Whitley received equipment vouchers to the value of £500 in the Good Conduct and Fair Play categories.

Hundreds of fans turned out on Saturday afternoon to cheer on the team during their open top bus tour. The town centre which was decked in blue and white bunting was packed with well wishers and despite rain later in the tour, crowds still poured out of the pubs and shops as the bus made its way through Tynemouth, Cullercoats and Monkseaton.

The Club presentations followed the parade and Paul Robinson picked up four of the awards. He was voted Club player of the Year, Players Player of the Year and Supporters Player of the Year. Added to that, his goal from inside his own half against Norton and Stockton Ancients won him the Goal of the Season Award.

Adam Johnston won the Golden Boot as top goalscorer and Tom Kindley was voted Young Player of the Year. The Chairman's Award was won jointly by management duo Ian Chandler and Steve Cuggy.

Awards for players who reached a landmark number of appearances included a special trophy for Terry Burke to mark his 400th appearance, a record for a Whitley goalkeeper.

To round off a truly memorable weekend, Barry Hindson and Paul Dixon presented Club Captain David Coulson with the BBC Newcastle Team of the Year trophy.
