28/06/2010 - Sid Cope - An Obituary

On behalf of the directors, management team, players, supporters and everyone involved with Whitley Bay F.C. We would like to express our great sorrow at the death of our club President Sid Cope. Our sincere condolences go to Betty, David and the family.

Sid gave over 40 years selfless, unpaid service to this club and in that time fulfilled many different roles within the club. He was an honest and honourable man.

Everything he did was for the good of his club, Whitley Bay F.C. He will be sadly missed around the club particularly on match days in the boardroom and at presentations for which he was renowned.

The directors have asked long standing friend and club historian Lynn Bone to write a club obituary for Sid on behalf of everyone involved at Whitley Bay F.C.

"It was with great sadness that everyone at Hillheads heard about the passing away of club President, Sid Cope last Thursday.

Sid was born in Birmingham and when serving in the RAF during the second world war, he was billeted in Whitley Bay for a while. It was during his time in the North East that he met Betty at a dance in the Rex Hotel. After their marriage they settled in Seaton Sluice and Sid worked his way up to become a Director for Young and Cunningham.

Sid started to watch The Bay in the mid 60's and moved on to serve the club for over 40 years. As a Director, Company secretary and latterly as Club President he worked tirelessly behind the scenes here at Hillheads. Presentation nights and Bay's reunion evenings all were handled by Sid with a professional touch that will be hard to replace.

A man with high values , Sid was never afraid to voice his opinion even if it meant him upsetting some people along the way' but above all he was highly respected, a fact that could be seen when any ex Bay player came to the club. His hard work and dedication to The Bay earned him a lifetime award from the NFA and he was also made a life member of The Bay.

Away from football his family always took priority and his other love was Tyne Boys Club where his knowledge saw him serve them in various roles for many years. His work for boy's clubs was nationally recognised when he and Betty were invited to Buckingham Palace to honour his unstinting work with the youngsters Sid will be sadly missed at Hilheads and will be virtually impossible to replace such was the amount of unseen work he done behind the scenes and his cheerful smile and welcoming touch will be missed when the Boardroom half time cuppas are dished out!

To Betty and all the family, everyone at Hillheads sends their sincere condolences."

Details of the funeral arrangements will be posted on the Whitley Bay website as soon as they become known.
