Match Report By Julian Tyley

Whitley’s first game at Hillheads since winning the FA Vase at Wembley attracted more than one thousand fans and they witnessed an entertaining game against Newcastle’s Reserve team.

For long periods of the game, Whitley matched their full time opponents and Chris Moore was again prominent on the right wing. With 18 minutes played, his cross into the goalmouth was headed over the bar by Leon Ryan and five minutes later another ball from the wing beat the leap of keeper Fraser Forster and flew beyond the far post. Shortly after, Adam Johnston’s low header from a Moore corner was narrowly off target.

Newcastle then broke downfield and a good move by the speedy Sammy Ameobi took him clear on the left. His cross into the goalmouth was slotted home by Brad Inman to put United ahead in the 28th minute. Chris Moore continued to pose the greatest threat for Whitley but United were quick to get men behind the ball so despite good approach work, scoring opportunities were limited and at half time it was the visitors who held a narrow lead.

Whitley made a series of substitutions at the break and at frequent intervals in the second half to give as many players as possible valuable match practice. Early on, Craig McFarlane made a goal line clearance for Whitley while at the other end, Coulson’s shot was saved by Tim Krul as the Bay captain tried to force the ball through a crowded goalmouth. Wesley Ngo Baheng doubled United’s lead twelve minutes into the second half with an excellent solo effort, breaking through from the half way line to fire the ball past Terry Burke.

Whitley stepped up the pressure and Lee Kerr had a chance from a free kick but the ball went wide of goal. Craig McFarlane’s shot was saved by Krul’s feet then at the other end Burke did equally well to deny Ameobi, the Bay keeper racing out to smother the shot. Paul Chow brought a good save from Krul but with 15 minutes left, the Newcastle keeper was beaten by the pace of Lee Kerr’s shot from the corner of the penalty area and his attempt to punch the ball clear merely saw the ball loop over his head and into the net. This was a goal that Whitley fully deserved and delighted the majority of the large crowd.

Hopes of an equaliser in the closing stages were dashed when Inman added Newcastle’s third goal in the final minute with a shot that bobbled in front of substitute keeper Matthew Crooks and flew over his head into the net.

Despite the final score, this was a good performance by Whitley and the big crowd created an excellent atmosphere.
