Match Report By Peter Fox
There have been times where Whitley have come unstuck in games like this but they made no mistake against bottom side Jarrow Roofing and the came was over inside the first 25 minutes.
With one eye on the FA Vase tie against Long Buckby next week, manager Ian Chandler shuffled his team around a little but the tone was set from the first minute when Adam Dowell in the Jarrow goal had to collect a Paul Robinson shot.
The first goal arrived after eight minutes. Paul Chow and Lee Kerr combined to work the ball to the left for Robinson and his pinpoint cross was sidefooted home by Mark Minto.
Minto looked on course for his second shortly afterwards when Mark Taylor fired in a cross but Jarrow’s already overworked defence managed to cut the ball out.
The respite was short lived however and Bay were two up after 15 minutes when skipper David Coulson headed home another Robinson cross.
Dowell pulled off a fine save from Kerr after the Bay striker met Taylor’s cross first time on the volley but the Jarrow keeper tipped the ball over the bar but the third goal arrived on 18 minutes when Kerr set off with Jarrow defender Alan Oliver for a long ball, and under pressure from Kerr, Oliver poked the ball past his own keeper.
Seven minutes later and Bay were 4-0 up when Kerr got on the scoresheet converting a Taylor cross and it looked like being a case of how many Bay would score.
After 28 minutes though Bay were reduced to ten men when during a rare Jarrow attack Brian Rowe hauled down Paul Taylor and as he was the last defender the referee had little option but to send him off.
IF Jarrow thought this might throw them a lifeline they were to be sorely disappointed as Dowell had to save from Chow after good work from Kerr and Dean Douglas, then tipped a Douglas shot around the post.
Dowell was keeping the score respectable from Jarrow’s point of view and he produced a wonderful save to keep out a Kerr header from a Douglas free kick and then towards half time Minto set up Robinson only for Dowell again to save Jarrow beating his shot away.
Ian Chandler decided to give Chris Moore a run out in the second half and he created a chance for Chow but the Bay striker fired over. Kerr was next to try his luck and he finally got around Dowell only to see his shot blocked on the line by Phil Graham.
The fifth finally arrived after 66 minutes when Chow was in the right place to get on the end of a Robinson cross to score against his old club from close range.
Terry Burke was called into action on a couple of occasions later on in the game saving well from a Craig Tate shot and then more easily from Jon Gibson, but Bay could have had the last word with Dowell doing well to block from Moore after a great run from the Bay winger, and a Robinson free kick being deflected for a corner with two minutes to go.
This win makes it eleven games unbeaten, including ten wins and the team are in great heart for the FA Vase tie next week.
Bay: Burke, Taylor, Douglas, Rowe, Coulson, Picton, Livermore (Graham), Minto (Moore), Chow (Woodhouse), Kerr, Robinson.
