Match Report By Julian Tyley Just 24 hours after the Newcastle friendly, virtually the same squad of Whitley players were in action at Northern League Second Division side Hebburn Town. It was hardly surprising therefore that some of the players were feeling the effects of the previous night’s exertions and as a result the first half was played at a rather subdued pace with the home side having a good share of possession. Hebburn took the lead on the half hour when McMann broke clear on the right and from around 20 yards out lobbed the ball over the advancing Terry Burke and into the net. In the first of a series of substitutions, Paul Robinson and Richard Hodgson replaced Lee Picton and Paul Chow after a short half time interval. Whitley’s equaliser came after 56 minutes when David Coulson headed home from Chris Moore’s right wing corner. As the game progressed, Hebburn tired and although Whitley created more chances they failed to capitalise on any of them. Craig McFarlane brought a good diving save with a low shot and Chris Fawcett’s cross from the left was somehow kept out by the keeper with the ball rebounding off Paul Chow and trickling inches wide of the post. In a late effort to force victory, Whitley substituted pace for experience as Chris Moore was replaced by Ian Chandler for the final four minutes of the game. The manager was not far off connecting with a through ball late on but the game ended with honours even. WHITLEY BAY: Burke, Robson, Reid, Reay, Coulson, Picton, Moore, Chow, Johnston, Bell, Fawcett. Second half substitutes: Robinson, Hodgson, McFarlane, Chandler
