Match Report By Peter Fox
Bay produced an imperious performance to knock out favourites and holders Truro City on their own pitch.
Truro as expected tried to force the pace and Mark Taylor was booked for a poor tackle early on but Terry Burke looked assured. City didnít look to clever at the back when under pressure and a long Lee Picton throw was scrambled away, then Paul Robinson put a shot wide. Whitley were certainly holding their own and they were gradually increasing the pressure and Jason Chapman collected a Picton cross under pressure, before Burke the Whitley defence dealt comfortably with a Marcus Martin free kick.
At this point Paul Robinson was looking Bayís main threat and Chapman had to tip a shot from him round the post before a Scott Walker shot was scrambled away at the other end.
Lee Picton had to go off five minutes before half time after the ball smashed into his face from point blank range and although he tried to carry on Dean Douglas came on as replacement.
Robinson again forced Chapman into action although the keeper was able to take the shot comfortably and the last action of the half saw Chris Reski shoot over.
The second half started with Robinson again getting a shot away but he was just off target, then after 57 minutes Paul Chow had a shot well blocked by Chapman and although Lee Kerr netted he was offside.
Kerr was just coming into the action after a quiet first half and when his shot was parried Chapman, Chow tried to follow up but was brought down in the area. Kerr stepped up to plant the spot kick in the corner of the net off the post to give Whitley the lead after 62 minutes.
The home side thought they were back in it when Reski netted eight minutes later but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Chow and Kerr linked up for another chance which the home defence managed to scramble away but with ten minutes to go the duo linked up again to put the game out of Truroís reach. Chow flicked the ball on and Kerr got to it ahead of everyone and at full stretch flicked the ball past Chapman with the outside of his foot.
The game was up now and the home fans sensed it and began to drift towards the exits but most of them were still in the ground when Chow sealed the win with a thumping header from Chris Grahamís corner. Damon Robson nearly got in on the act but was just off target in the final minute and when the final whistle blew there was a great celebration with fans and players alike joining in. After this result no-one will fancy drawing Whitley Bay in the quarter finals.
