Match Report By Stephen Tyley

Hodgson received the ball 35 yards out and fended off several challenges before netting from close range. 1 - 0.

On 15 minutes, Johnston challenged the keeper for a high ball and fell painfully onto the metal pole used to anchor the back of the net. (Health & Safety issue?) He needed attention from the physio, but was able to continue until half-time.

Moore chased a long cross-field pass, beating the defender for pace before crossing the ball from the bye-line to Hodgson by the penalty spot. Hodgson laid it off for Johnston who had no difficulty in placing the ball into the corner of the net. 2 -0.

Whitley Bay dominant through the first half; Kindley rarely troubled, though he did make one good diving save at the foot of the upright.

Bell (sub) on for Johnston for second half. Chow later subbed for Reay. Kerr, who had played very effectively mid-field, now up front with Bell.

Gateshead made several changes at half-time, including goalkeeper, and were a more potent force in the second half. Around the hour, they pulled one goal back. 2-1.

On 70 minutes, Hodgson, who had an excellent game, crossed from the right into the six-yard box where Coulson was first to the ball and headed firmly into the net. 3-1.

Gateshead continued to pressure the home goal and scored their second on 75minutes. 3-2.

Unlike Blyth Spartans a week ago, Gateshead were unable to convert their late pressure into an equaliser, and Whitley Bay ran out worthy winners.

Fine performances from the whole team, with McFarlane, Reid, Moore, Kerr, Johnston and Chow deserving special mention, but Man of the Match: Richard Hodgson.

Whitley Bay: Kindley, McFarlane, Reid, Hodgson, Coulson, Fawcett, Moore, Kerr, Johnston (Sub Bell, 46min), Chow (Sub Reay), Robinson. Subs not used: Timmons, Picton.
